A year’s worth of Laundry Soap
We are always looking for a way to save money. We enjoy making things from scratch and Laundry Soap is no exception. Below is the recipe for granulated and liquid laundry soap. We prefer liquid over granulated.
Liquid Laundry Soap Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cup Borax
2 cup Super Washing Soda
1 bar Zote Soap (Fels-Naptha can also be used if preferred)
4.5 gallons hot water
1 bucket (5-gallon capacity)
A large pot
Instructions:
Prepare the Zote Soap: Grate the entire bar of Zote Soap using a cheese grater or food processor.
Dissolve the Soap: In a large pot, combine the grated Zote Soap with 4 cups of hot water. Stir over medium heat until the soap is fully dissolved. This may take some time, so be patient.
Combine Ingredients: Once the soap is dissolved, remove the pot from the heat. Add 2 cup of Borax and 2 cup of Super Washing Soda to the mixture. Stir well until both powders are completely dissolved.
Transfer to Bucket: Fill your 5-gallon bucket halfway with hot water. Pour the soap mixture into the bucket while stirring continuously.
Add Additional Water: Fill the remainder of the bucket with more hot water, mixing thoroughly as you go. Stir until the mixture is well combined.
Let it Sit: Cover the bucket and let the soap sit for 24 hours. This allows it to thicken.
Stir Before Use: After 24 hours, stir the soap thoroughly before using. The consistency may be gel-like or watery, which is normal.
Usage:
Use about 1/2 cup of the liquid laundry soap per load of laundry.
Shake or stir the mixture before each use as it may separate over time.
Storage:
Store the liquid soap in an airtight container and keep it in a cool, dry place. It can last for several months if stored properly.
Enjoy your homemade laundry soap that's both budget-friendly and effective!
Granulated Laundry Soap Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup Borax
1 cup Super Washing Soda
1 bar Zote Soap (grated)
Instructions:
Grate the Zote Soap: Using a box grater, finely grate the Zote Soap bar. Ensure the pieces are small to allow for easy mixing and dissolving in water.
Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated Zote Soap, Borax, and Super Washing Soda. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Store the Mixture: Transfer the mixture into an airtight container. Ensure it is sealed properly to keep moisture out.
Usage: For regular laundry, use 1-2 tablespoons of the granulated soap per load, depending on the size and soil level of the laundry.
Tip: For an extra boost in stain-fighting power, consider adding a few drops of essential oils to your mixture before storing.
This homemade laundry soap is budget-friendly, effective, and makes use of simple ingredients, promoting a more sustainable lifestyle!
